Gynaecologists and radiologists from all over the state have demanded a fair gradation of punishment under the Pre-natal pre- conception determination test (PC-PNDT) Act. They also claimed that there have been three deaths, two in Jalgaon and one in Ahmednagar due to unavailability of sonography facility.
Citing the two recent incidents from Jalgaon where two women with ectopic preganancy died failing emergency ultrasound scan facility, Dr Sujata Mahajan, secretary, obstetric and gynaecologists Jalgaon said, “Out of 82 sonography centres in Jalgaon city, 32 are sealed, and in rural Jalgaon 78 out of 150 are shut. In June, two patients died of shock because of the delay in diagnosing ectopic pregnancy, where the foetus is lodged in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus.”
Dr P.K. Shah, president of FOGSI said, “A majority of the doctors have been affected because of minor lapses under the (PC-PNDT) Act such as not displaying the board saying — sex determination — conspicuously. This is not fair.”
Dr Shah added that he would call office-bearers from all over India to lobby for gradation of punishment under the (PC-PNDT) Act.
In a state-wide meeting of the association of Maharashtra Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies (MOGS) on Wednesday, gynaecologists and radiologists agreed that they feltthreatened by the government’s crackdown.
