Even as the crime branch is seeking legal opinion to check the feasibility of a confrontation between terror suspect Abu Jundal and 26/11 accused Ajmal Aamir Kasab, senior officials said that it is highly unlikely that they will do so in the course of his first custody that ends on July 31.
Officers said that a team that is looking after the paperwork is also examining the need for confrontation, which might happen only when they get Jundal’s custody next.
Earlier, the crime branch had indicated that Jundal would be confronted with Kasab, after it gets his custody from the Delhi court. “During his interrogation, Kasab had said that a few Pakistanis including one by the name Abu Jundal had sent the 10 terrorists onboard MV Kuber from Pakistan. Once the two are confronted with each other, more details about Jundal’s exact role in the attacks will come to light,” said an officer.
Another officer, who is part of the six-member team that is interrogating Jundal, said that while the confrontation can prove helpful for the investigations, it is not likely till July 31.
“We will be seeking an extension of his custody and the confrontation might happen only when we get his custody next,” he said.
The crime branch is also seeking the opinion of legal experts regarding the confrontation. “It is important to assess how the confrontation might help in building the case against Jundal. Moreover, another team that is looking after the paperwork will inform the seniors if the confrontation is advisable,” said a source.
