Saina Nehwal plays against Switzerland’s Sabrina Jaquet (unseen) at a women’s singles badminton match at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London on Sunday. World number five Saina beat her 65th ranked opponent 21-9, 21-4 in just 22 minutes.
Earlier on Saturday night, India’s top boxer Vijender Singh also began his Games campaign with a comfortable 14-10 win over Kazakhstan’s Danabek Sukhanov. Later on Sunday, another Indian boxer Jai Bhagwan stormed into the pre-quarterfinals of the lightweight category.
There were disappointments on most other fronts as the archers, paddlers and shooters fell by the wayside on the second day of the Games. It was curtains on India’s table tennis challenge as Soumyajit Ghosh, 19, was knocked out in the men’s singles second round. — PTI
