In the wake of the Northern, Eastern and North Eastern grids collapsing on Tuesday, resulting in power failure in 22 states including the capital New Delhi, southern states have been asked to reduce load and maintain “grid discipline” to avoid power blackouts.
The Bengaluru-based Power System Operation Corporation Ltd (Posco), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Power Grid Corporation of India supervising the Southern regional grid, has given the instruction in this regard, stated an official release from Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited.
Power System Operation Corporation Ltd has asked Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry to reduce load, maintain the grid frequency above 49.5 Hz, grid security and discipline.
“In accordance with the Indian Electricity Grid Code 2010, the grid discipline is strictly maintained by Tamil Nadu despite the failure of South West monsoon, infirm nature of wind-power and frequent outages of central generating stations,” it said.
While the northern grid collapsed on Tuesday for the second time in two days, the eastern transmission lines too failed in the afternoon disrupting power supply in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Assam and Punjab, among other states.
A release said that the reason for the collapse was due to a line fault near Agra.
“Deficient rainfall during this sowing season was making farmers dependant more on ground water which increased the demand in the last few days,” said the release by Posco.
