Many areas in the city will go without water if the repair works on the cistern at Puttangandi in Nalgonda district is not completed in another 10 days. Currently, the Akkampally Balancing Reservoir has enough water stored to supply the city for 10 days, from Krishna phase-I and II. The cistern (artificial lake) at Puttangandi village in Nalgonda sprang a major leak a month ago. It has to be repaired before the irrigation department can pump adequate water into it. Lack of coordination between the Water Board and the irrigation department has delayed the repairs for more than a month now.
Sources said it took the intervention of panchayat raj minister K. Jana Reddy and major irrigation minister Sudarshan Reddy to resolve the issue and get the irrigation department to award the contract for the repairs to an expert private agency. Sundar Ram Reddy, Water Board in-charge director (technical), confirmed that the water available in the Akkampalli reservoir will supply the city for only 10 days. But he said he was confident that the repair work will be completed within a week. The Board is monitoring the situation regularly in coordination with the irrigation department, he said. About 180 MGD of water is supplied every day to the city through the Krishna phase-I and phase-II lines.
