Dump waste in the Ernakulam market canal and you face penal proceedings in addition to a hefty fine. In short, local folks need to unlearn a lot of things they’d thought were right all these ‘stinking’ years.
In a first-of-its kind action plan, the state irrigation department plans to install four cameras at various places along the market canal to catch the waste dumpers.
After installing the cameras, the city corporation will be assigned the task of seeing that they run without a hitch. The cameras can store visuals recorded up to 20 days.
Hibi Eden, MLA, who was at the market canal on Wednesday, said that the renovation work on the canal would start by the end of November. Earlier, he had urged the state government to conceive a special project for renovating the canal.
The department has prepared a detailed project report and given the administrative nod for the renovation work at a cost of Rs 1.5 cr.
After the renovation and cleaning, tall mesh fences will be erected to protect the canal from garbage dumping.
