[1]The Ernakulam Additional Sessions Court on Wednesday awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment to Shobha John and five other chief conspirators in the sensational Tantri Kandararu Mohanaru blackmailing case.
The court also awarded 12 year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 11,000 each to Abdul Sathar, and Shareef, the other accused .
The sessions judge E.C. Hari Govindan awarded the accused seven years of rigorous imprisonment each and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on the main accused.
The court on Wednesday found Shobha John, third accused Anil Kumar and fourth accused Bechu Rehman guilty under Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and under section 395 respectively.
The court also awarded them two years imprisonment each and asked them to pay a fine of
Rs 6,000 each under section 385 (threat) and section 354 respectively.
The court also awarded four years imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Bechu Rehman. The judge ordered the sentence to run concurrently.
The tenth and eleventh accused Asees and Biji Peter got four years of rigorous imprisonment and Rsc 5,000 as a fine.
The prosecution successfully established the crime committed by Shobha John, Anil Kumar and Bechu Rehman who had hatched a conspiracy and executed the plan with the help of goons.
The accused had threatened Tantri using a gun and grabbed his ornaments including his rings from a flat in Kochi on July 23, 2006.
The case against Binil Kumar alias Bijil of Vellarada, Ashif and Abdul Sahad who were absconding in the case has been split up.
The prosecution sought the maximum punishment for the accused considering the gravity of the crime.
