[1]The BBMP Employees’ Association has called off its protest on Friday evening following an assurance by Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy that its demands will be looked into by Monday.
The functioning of BBMP was paralysed for three days as the employees’ association members protested against what they termed as harassment by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF), which has been prosecuting erring officials.
The strike had led to garbage piling up like mountains on all streets and, with rain lashing the city, citizens fear the further spread of mosquito-borne dengue. The piled-up garbage may still take days to clear.
After meeting Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, BBMP commissioner M. K. Shankarlinge Gowda and the association members, Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy said the government has been updated about the situation and will decide in favour of the employees.
Efforts will be made to withdraw the prosecution powers given to the BMTF while the fate of the complaints registered against engineers and other officials of the BBMP will be decided later, or it may just take the legal course, said Mr Murthy. The BMTF police station will be moved to the BMTC office at Shantinagar.
The president of the employees’ association, Mr R. Subramanyam, said the mayor and commissioner have given an assurance that the issue will be resolved by Monday evening. They have also said that the association is free to hold any kind of protest if it is not happy with the decision.
