Fashion pays a tricoloured tribute

Come Independence Day and you can see showrooms displaying mannequins draped in clothes with the tricolour theme. There are also several offers celebrating the relevance of the three colours. This year, we have more reason to celebrate as our gallant athletes have brought home six medals from the London Olympics — our biggest haul so far!

For the young, this is the right time to wear their patriotism on their sleeves, quite literally too. Pameer Sethi, director, Brut Fashion, says, “We have mannequins decked up in tricolour outfits, and customers are walking in to enquire about the combinations. The rush starts a day or two before Independence Day and Republic Day, so we make sure that we are prepared to meet the demands. We also suggest the right combinations that people could try.”
However, designers suggest not overdoing it. Stylist Kaushik Velendra cautions, “One need not to wear all the three colours to represent themselves. You can make a statement by picking even one colour from the flag and accessorise from head-to-toe with it. Make a strong fashion statement by paying respect to your nation; it’s as simple as that.”
Even the online shopping websites are cashing in on this concept. Apart from discounts on their various products they are doing their bit to give it back to the society.
Manu K Jain of Jabong.com, says, “Keeping the true spirit of freedom alive, our site would be contributing `5 per transaction to Udyan Care, an NGO with the vision to regenerate the lives of the disadvantaged. It would be used for the cause of child education. It’s the best way of using fashion for a cause.”
Sneha Sankar, a third-year college student, says, “I was very impressed with Lady Gaga’s look when she came to India, especially the great idea of streaking her blonde hair with the three colours of the flag. I also look forward to finding out what Mandira Bedi is wearing, as she always comes up with something quirky using all the three colours. I am planning to wear a white salwar kameez with a red and green Bandhni dupatta.”
