Assange says Ecuador asylum is 'significant victory'

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Thursday described Ecuador's decision to grant him asylum as a 'significant victory'.

Addressing staff at the Ecuadoran embassy in London where he took refuge two months ago, Assange said: "It is a significant victory for myself, and my people. Things will probably get more stressful now."

Sweden summoned Ecuador's Stockholm-based ambassador to explain Quito's claims against the Swedish justice system's ability to give WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange a fair trial.

"The Ecuadoran ambassador is expected at the ministry as soon as possible. The accusations that (the Ecuadoran foreign ministry) has formulated are serious and it is unacceptable that Ecuador would want to halt the Swedish judicial process and European judicial cooperation," Anders Joerle, spokesman for the Swedish foreign ministry said.
