[1]Rains will soon replenish arid parts of Malayattoor, thanks to a novel rain-harvest project being implemented by students and greens activists.
A simple device, with its top fiberglass funnel, collects rainwater that runs through a pipe into a soak pit near the well.
This also recharges groundwater.“This simple device is particularly effective in places like Malayattoor, with a steep terrain, where wells often go dry,” says Prof S Seetharaman, environmentalist.
Four recharge units, each costing ` 1,500, are required for a well. Rainwater from rooftop is also canalized to pits.
Malayattoor Neeleeswaram SNDP High School students have started a campaign with the help of V. J. Samson of FORD, an organization in Angamaly, and Prof Seetharman, who leads National Green Corps in the district.
