A 24-hour helpline for children will be soon launched by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to redress the child abuse complaints on fast track mode.
In an interview to Deccan Chronicle, NCPCR special advisor Lakshmidhar Mishra said that this helpline would ensure that victimised children get quicker justice.
“The proposal for the helpline is finalised. We are awaiting funds from the government. The helpline will be equipped to provide service in various languages and to start with, we will have Hindi and English,” he said.
Speaking on education and child rights, Mishra said, “Syllabus in the teacher training institutes should be revised and importance of child-friendly education should be taught to teachers.
Our school syllabus and subjects have improved but not the text books given to young teachers who impart knowledge to children. Many teachers still believe that beating students is their birth right.”
He said that teachers should be educated about child psychology and child rights beyond their books. “If only teachers understand learning is a joyous activity, they would pass the same joy to their students in the classrooms” he added.
Mishra pointed out that state commission for children is functioning well in 17 states in the country. The Tamil Nadu government should form the commission without further delay as the state stands atop in education sector.
