Police sub-inspectors in Andhra Pradesh would soon be given the rank of gazetted officers, while constables would be promoted as assistant sub-inspectors after three years of service, according to the director-general of police, Mr V. Dinesh Reddy.
He said this after the SP Dr C.M. Trivikrama Varma’s wife C. Suvarna inaugurated the first police canteen in the state in Kakinada, where police personnel can draw ration and buy other commodities at subsidised rates. The DGP said the police department proposed giving gazetted officer status to SIs as they are drawing salary equivalent to that of tahsildars.
Praising Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy’s efforts for ensuring the welfare of the police force, he said among other efforts medical reimbursement of police personnel is being increased to `1 crore, while Rs 20 crore would be sanctioned for repairing houses.
According to Mr Dinesh Reddy, work on constructing a 50-bed super-specialty hospital in Hyderabad would begin soon.
He said efforts are on to implement the Koumidi Committee’s recommendations to improve the working conditions of home guards.
He said they would be provided education, medical and other facilities, and would get a salary hike and Arogyasri cards soon.
Calling the Andhra Pradesh police one of the best in the country, he said canteens on the line of the one in Kakinada would be set up in every district for police personnel.
