[1]Amidst Madras week celbrations, activists have called for conserving heritage buildings as they draw a picture of the past, present and future of Singara Chennai.
Though the Mylapore Festival, Madras week lectures, poetry, music, dance and films on heritage structures are a fillip to this effort, the key is to integrate these ideals into the normal course of life for Chennai’s residents, say activists.
But what gives Chennai its identity; if it is its people, architecture or its culture? The answer would be all the factors contribute to it.
Despite all these factors, the landscape and buildings play a predominant role in adding charm to the city.
“One would never miss out the Central railway station, the Marina, Madras University or the Rippon Building when they think of Chennai.
These images are branded in our minds,” says septuagenarian Ramanujam, a resident of Mandaveli, who has spent all his growing years in Chennai.
Though we come across these heritage buildings every day, one hardly pauses to think about they’ve survived the test of time.
“ It is essential to conserve heritage buildings as they play an important role in making Chennai a city to remember,” says conservation architect Shankaran.
