Violent games lead to cruelty

Playing games on computers, consoles and mobiles is quite popular among gaming enthusiasts. Every time a new version of Game Cube, XBox, or Sony Playstation is launched in the market it creates a lot of buzz.

However, the problem arises when gaming becomes an addiction and the virtual violence translates as aggression in real life.
Is the rise in popularity of games like Mortal Combat, Max Payne, Counter Strike, Grand Theft Auto, which are highly interactive and promotes bloodshed, a sign of hidden danger? “As long as the game is played as a means of recreation, it is absolutely fine,” says Dr Rima Sehgal, a consultant psychologist, adding, “At times, games are even cathartic. One can vent out their frustration in restrained manner by playing games. Too much exposure can lead to aggressive behaviour.”

The arrival of a new generation of “ultraviolent” video games in the early 90s and continuing unabated to the present resulted in large numbers of youth actively participating in entertainment violence. Adds Dr Sehgal, “Most of these games have certain set targets. The requisite route might involve fighting numerous blockades and one has to win by hook or crook. This idea might have a bearing on young impressionable minds.”
Games intends to build an emotional connect, feels Kinshuk Sunil, a professional game developer. He says, “Killing a virtual person and a real person are two extremely experiences. Besides, a good game is about conflict resolution.”
However, the gaming enthusiasts feel that games are a way of escaping into a fantasy world for youth. “I wanted to be a part of the armed forces. Since I could not make it, I try to experience that by war playing games . I feel they are therapeutic.” says Akshat Mahajan, an IT professional.
