Kerala high court has issued notices to Kannur University and the state government for denying a visually challenged woman appointment as a lecturer at the university.
Justice S. Siri Jagan issued the notices when a petition filed by Prasanna Kumari, 45, of Chottanikkara, who moved the court alleging that the university denied her the job despite her having all stipulated qualifications.
Advocate Sangeetha Lakshmana, appearing for Prasanna Kumari, argued that the university’s action was arbitrary, illegal and in violation of the Constitution.
Her client was kept out even though she was successful at the interview conducted by the
university.
Of the five candidates who had applied for the handicapped quota, only she had cleared the National Eligibility Test. After several months, she learned that a candidate from the general quota was appointed
to the post in the law department.
The interview was conducted on July 9, 2008. The court ordered the notices and posted the case to September 19.
