After making changes in the law to re-enforce strength in the Waqf Act 1995, the government has launched a scheme for its state boards, which can stop rampant encroachment of Waqf properties across the country.
“Since the amended law provides for penal provisions for encroachers, the new scheme is aimed at providing training and technology. This will enable the state boards to work in a changed scenario,” sources in the government said.
Already, Rs 7 crores has been sanctioned for the scheme in the current financial year, sources said, in the first phase 15 Waqf boards would benefit from the scheme. They added that the scheme would be later extended to rest of the 14 boards.
The scheme will be implemented in line with the recommendation of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on Waqf, and will provide grants-in-aid for strengthening its boards.
The findings of the JPC, which finally led to an amendment in the Waqf Act, had held that most of the state Waqf boards lack resources to function effectively. As per section 32 of the Wakf Act 1995, the general administration of all Waqf properties in a state vest in the board established by the state.

4 suspects are grilled

Officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) picked up four suspects, including a woman officer working in the Indian Railways in Raipur, in connection with the Railway Recruitment Board scam. The arrested were grilled by investigators for their involvement in the scam. Sources in the CBI said that four special teams were sent to various cities in the country as part of the investigation.
A senior Central Bureau of Investigation official said that, “We had conducted a review and sent teams to investigate.”
