This might look like a mishap in itself at first sight, given the number of road accidents in the city every day, but it comes straight from the top traffic cop: The number of accidents in Hyderabad have steadily been decreasing for the past three years. According to statistics of the Hyderabad Traffic Police, while there has been a steady decline in road accidents in the last three years, the improvement in the trend has been considerably higher this year.
Even then, the city has seen 1,518 accidents so far, of which 284 have been fatal, and traffic cops said they are working to bring down this number further. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) P.V.S. Rama-krishna said careful monitoring of the signalling system is one of the main reasons for the improvement in traffic situation. He said more than 3,500 e-challans are sent every day for traffic violations, which is largely due to the improved monitoring system. The DCP pointed out that two-wheelers and four-wheelers contribute to nearly 60 per cent of road accidents recorded in the city while adding that most accidents occur due to disproportionate road space vis-a-vis traffic volume.
