Gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli, who has been convicted in the Jamsandekar murder case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, told the court on Tuesday about his “huge fortunes.”
Pleading innocence even after his conviction, Gawli told special judge Prithviraj Chavan that he does not need to kill anyone for money.
Judge Chavan has held Gawli and 11 others guilty for the murder of former Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar. The prosecution has pressed for capital punishment for Gawli and his accomplices Vijay Giri and Pratap Godse.
The judge on Tuesday heard arguments of defence lawyers on the quantum of sentence. After lawyers completed arguments, the judge asked Mr Gawli if he wants to say anything. In his five-minute talk, Gawli told the court how he had established himself in politics and he did not need money.
Judge Chavan posted the orders on quantum of punishment to August 31.
Earlier, defence counsel Sudip Pasbola, appearing for Gawli and others, said that there is no evidence to prove that the accused has killed Jamsande-kar.
He also contended that it was not the “rarest of rare” case to award capital punishment.
