The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC)’s plan to build a multistoreyed parking lot at the T Nagar bus terminus has hit a roadblock with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) rejecting it on grounds that it did not comply with the developmental control rules.
MTC sources say the parking lot had been designed by the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Ltd (Tufisil).
“We have engaged Tufisil to do a feasibility study for developing multilevel complexes in a few of our depots where land is available.
But the proposal for T Nagar was not accepted by the CMDA,” said an MTC official, explaining that it was shot down because it allegedly did not conform to the setback norms stipulated in development control rules.
The parking facility was planned in the basement of the terminus, leaving the ground floor for parking buses and other commercial activities.
“Now that the proposal has been rejected, we will decide whether to rework it or seek the government’s help in getting approval,” the official added.
The AIADMK government had announced in its first budget that the transport department would develop commercial complexes at 11 locations across the state to net additional revenue and improve its finances. The complexes were expected to have amenities such as parking facility for the commuters .
Transport officials later identified two terminuses in Chennai, at Tiruvanmiyur and T Nagar, to develop the complexes and gave the job of preparing the feasibility report to Tufisil.
