Investigations into the smashing of HuJI and Lashkar-e-Tayyaba module in Karnataka earlier this week have now spanned to various states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
The progress into the investigations, which has been described as a key breakthrough for terror modules in southern India, was reviewed at a high-level intelligence meeting on Saturday.
Sources said the probe has confirmed that the module had links with terror operatives in Gujarat. This information is being developed further along with the state police and Central agencies who are trying to ascertain whether the terror module was planning to foment trouble in the state during the coming Assembly elections due in November.
It has also been revealed that one of the associates of these suspects was in Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh from where he was in touch with LeT contacts in Saudi Arabia. It was this particular number that gave the investigating agencies initial breakthrough into the case.
Investigations have already confirmed that a key nuclear installation and Navy and Army facilities in southern India were on the radar of this terror module. The module was also planning to target leaders of a particular political outfit.
“We have asked various state police and the Central intelligence to jointly work on this case as it is now not limited to any one particular state but has national ramifications,” a senior MHA official said.
