Met officials predict that the city will be experiencing heavy showers for the next few days due to formation of low pressure area. The city experienced a heavy downpour for several hours on Sunday night due to the shift in heat waves and the showers are expected to continue through the week.
Meanwhile, traffic came to a standstill in several areas due to the stagnation of rainwater and residents of low-lying areas faced the brunt of the downpour as their normal life was disrupted.
Due to the strong winds, trees were uprooted in Nungambakkam and Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. Fire and rescue services personnel were called in to remove the trees and make way for vehicles.
While Nungambakkam recorded 38.8 mm rain, Meenambakkam received 22.4 mm and Red Hills received 42.6 mm of rain. The outskirts have received a lot of rain and the showers are expected to continue for the next few days, said weather officials.
Thamaraipakkam recorded 22 mm of rain, Korattur received 33 mm, Chembarambakkam 20.5 and Sholavaram received 35 mm of rain on Sunday night.
Due to the heavy downpour, the groundwater table has increased and the city would not face drinking water problems, say experts.
For the next few days there would be a considerable amount of rain, said sources at Regional Meteorological Centre.
