[1]Former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy was not very keen on a CBI probe against his arch rival and Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu in the controversial IMG Bharata case, if the state government's latest affidavit in High Court is any indication. Contrary to the YSR Congress' contention that the CBI refused to inquire IMG Bharata as part of the larger understanding reached between Mr Naidu and the Congress, the CBI turned down the state's request way back on January 29, 2007.
According to the affidavit filed by the home department, the CBI info-rmed the state that as most of its officers were busy in other inquiries, it were not possible to take up the IMG Bharata probe because of resource constraints. Interestingly, YSR, who enjoyed great rapport with the Centre, did not use his clout to force the CBI to agree to the probe. Instead, the then government chose to implement the CBI's suggestion to get the matter inquired by the state agency, CID. The government departments concerned wasted five months in handing over the material to CID to launch the probe.
Meanwhile, on August 8, 2007, the HC expressed “anguish and concern” over the police not inquiring into the transaction. It further said the CBI ought to have been entrusted the case. When the government wrote to CBI on August 16, 2007, the latter once again turned down the request on September 14, 2007 citing “resource constrains.” Yet, YSR did not push the CID to complete the preliminary probe quickly and revert to the CBI for further probe.
