DMK lands in ‘divine’ trouble

DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi’s choice of a ‘divine’ reception committee at his Villupuram rally has not gone down well with Hindu leaders.

While the Tamil Nadu Hindu Maha Sabha has filed a complaint against party bigwigs for ‘desecrating’ Hindu Gods, senior politician L. Ganesan issued a jibe at Karunanidhi, declaring that he had failed in his ‘rationalism’ by the ‘petty act’.

At a grand celebration of the DMK’s founding day at Villupuram on September 15, party president Karunanidhi, along with treasurer M. Stalin and general secretary K. Anbazhagan were received by a group of dancers made up as Hindu gods.

Dressed in costumes depicting Shiva, Parvathy, Murugan and Vinayaka, the dancers put up a show for the group of atheist leaders, as they ascended the stage at the ‘Mupparum vizha’.

“The DMK has not denigrated Hindu Gods, they have denigrated themselves. Their lofty rationalist ideals have been demolished,” said L. Ganesan, senior BJP leader.

“ In my opinion, they have failed in their rationalism the minute they turned to gods to embellish their Villupuram rally. This action is a major failure of their theist principals,” he quipped.

Meanwhile, TN Hindu Maha Sabha president K. Srikandan has sent a petition to the chief minister’s cell and the director general of police, demanding that the organizer of the rally K. Ponmudy and other office-bearers of the DMK be arrested under the National Secutity Act.

“Not only have they blasphemed against our revered gods and hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus by putting up such a show, but also maligned the unity and harmony of the people,” he says in his petition.
