Protesters throw traffic out of gear

On Monday traffic in the city was thrown out of gear at two vital points, Anna Salai and SC Bose Road near the High Court, because of protests.

While the protests by Muslims at the US consulate near Anna flyover at Gemini Circle forced the police to divert traffic, Law College students blocked traffic near the High Court on the Koodamkulam issue.

There were protests near Tarapore Tower by a group Muslims and the police was doubly careful on Monday and made sure that the protesters don’t rush towards the US mission.

They had blocked Anna flyover — service road towards Cathedral Road from Anna Salai and vehicles were stopped from the morning.

“This is happening daily after the TMMK attacked the US mission on Friday evening. The police failed to stop the attackers, now they are stopping every road users and asking them to take other routes,” said Mr G.K. Indran, who runs a web firm in Chetpet.

In the traffic chaos since morning, at least two ambulances were struck. “The entire stretch was jam packed. I was supposed to drop my daughter to Church Park.

She was 20 minutes late for class because we were caught in traffic in the morning,” said Ms Sai Leela Chezhian, a college administrator residing in Kodambakkam.

A Facebook user, Aravind Ganesan commented on the City Traffic police’s FB page: “…. I saw ambulances carrying patients being stuck in the traffic jam.

Prophet is a great person and his image can’t be tarnished by anyone. Muslims are really kind people and I urge them not to disturb general public and instead they can do a peace march to show their anger towards the director of that movie without affecting anyone.”

Meanwhile in front of High court, a group of 50 law students appeared suddenly and tried to block the road in support of protestors at Koodamkulam. “Their show went on for two hours. We had to divert the traffic,” police said.
