People plant crops in slushy road to highlight sorry plight

With interior streets remaining in bad conditions, residents of Maduravoyal staged a novel protest by planting crops on the slush roads.

Residents complain that without black topping, the roads are muddy and it becomes slushy even after light rains making life miserable for pedestrians and motorists.

They added that the roads have not been re-laid at many localities of Maduravoyal for several years citing on-going underground drainage work (UDW).

Mr K. Ramachandran, a resident of Varadharaja Perumal Nagar, said that motorists had to endure bumpy and dusty rides on the uneven surface which posed a risk to them. “Tyres often get often damaged as they have to use roads with gravel exposed,” he said.

Ms R. Rekha, local resident and an employee of a private firm in Anna Nagar, said that auto rickshaw drivers often refused to come to the area because of the bad roads. “Even if they come, they charge more,” she said.
