More than 2.15 lakh CAT aspirants have purchased vouchers for taking the test this year, signifying an increase of about 10,000 students compared to last year.
Banks had sold about 2.15 lakh vouchers until September 17, when it came to an end, Prof. S.S.S. Kumar, the CAT 2012 convener, IIM Kozhikode, told Deccan Chronicle over phone on Tuesday.
“We are still consolidating the final figures with banks. The highest number of voucher sales was seen on July 30 (the first day). On the final day (September 17), close to 6,000 vouchers were sold, resulting in a 33 per cent higher sale than last year,” he said.
Candidates who have purchased vouchers and are yet to register have until September 19 to complete their registration and scheduling process at www.catiim.in [1].
M.J. Xavier, director, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ranchi, said that as students want to get into better jobs and with the current market lull students join colleges for better job prospects.
“This is just a marginal increase. We have seen the numbers touch 2.71 lakh a couple of years ago So there is nothing much this year. If the job market is good we will have less applicants for CAT and vice-versa,” he said.
As many as 2.04 lakh students registered for CAT during 2010 and the number rose to 2.05 the next year.
