A team of Nagpur police on Thursday arrested a probationary officer with the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) at Bengaluru for sexually harassing his wife and allegedly videographing the act to blackmail her for more dowry. The victim, who was also his batchmate and serving in the rank of assistant income tax officer, was working in Bengaluru before she returned to her hometown Nagpur where she filed a complaint with the Gittikhadan police station on Wednesday. Based on the complaint, a police team from there landed in Bengaluru and picked up probationary IRS officer Nishwant Davrajan Kullulathil, on Thursday morning. He was arrested with the help of local police from his sister’s house in Amruthhalli where he was hiding, police said.
Kullalathil was later taken to Nagpur for further investigation. Police have booked him under unnatural sexual offence, criminal intimidation, blackmail and dowry harassment. Kullalathil, a native of Kerala, was in love with his batchmate and the two got married in February against their parents’ wishes and were staying in a rented house in Koramangala. A few days after the wedding, the accused started harassing her for dowry and also used to exploit her sexually by videographing the acts and blackmail her to get more dowry. Unable to bear the physical and mental harassment, the victim went back to Nagpur and stayed in a hostel, police said.
Kullalathil, who went to meet her earlier this month on the pretext of apologising to her, had allegedly sodomised her in her hostel room in Nagpur and videographed it. He even threatened to upload the obscene videos on the internet if she did not give him the dowry of Rs 10 lakh. She has even alleged that on February 6 and September 3 this year, she was allegedly sodomised by her husband and he took videos of it, police said.
Apart from her husband, the victim has also accused her in-laws for mentally harassing her for dowry. Further investigations are on.
