Reiterating its demand of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation over controversial coal blocks allocation, the BJP on Friday passed a political resolution targeting the UPA government for “subverting constitutional institutions”, its ineffectiveness on the internal security front and its alleged involvement in various scams, including 2G spectrum allocation, irregularities in CWG preparations and the coalgate scam.
The party also ratified the amendment to its constitution enabling the party president, state and district unit chiefs to get a second term. The party also felicitated Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for getting the agriculture leadership award for increasing the agricultural growth rate of his state to 18 per cent.
“This government is engaging in corruption and is then being brazen about it. Have they got any inner conscience which is needed to continue in office? This is a government of, for and by the corrupt,” senior leader M.M. Joshi said.
Slamming Dr Singh for questioning institutions like CAG and PAC, the resolution said: “This is a dangerous trend for democracy and called for overthrowing the present dispensation.”
“This is totally unacceptable in a democracy and the Congress shall only regret this grave error committed by the Prime Minister himself,” Dr Joshi said.
Senior leader Rajnath Singh moved the resolution to amend Article 21 of the party constitution on extending the tenure of party chief and chiefs of states and district units. The proposal was seconded by M. Venkaiah Naidu. The national council approved the resolution unanimously.
Mr Naidu clarified during the passing of the amendment that this is an “enabling provision” and the incumbent does not “automatically” get a second term. Though this caused a minor flutter, he clarified to the state unit and district unit chiefs that they should not carry the impression that they are getting another term.
