When most girls her age are fantasising about landing their dream guy or being the showstopper at college dos, Urvashi Rautela, 18, is sitting pretty with the title of I Am She Miss India Universe 2012 crown which she won recently. “The winning moment was something more than just a childhood dream,” says the pageant winner, who is currently pursuing English (Hons) from Delhi University.
“I’ve always wanted to bring back the crown to my country and now I have the opportunity to do it,” says Urvashi, who beat 1,800 beauties to win the crown.
Talking about her love for Delhi, Urvashi says, “I simply love Delhi. I started my modelling career from here. Delhi is a fashionable capital. Living here has definitely helped me groom my personality.”
She says, “Though I have to be diet-conscious, I simply can’t resist chaat papdi and paranthas of Paranthe Wali Gali in Chandni Chowk.”
The 5’9’’ beauty is also a national-level basketball player and has competed in long jump, high jump, volleyball and kho kho at the district-level.
What was her strategy to win the title? “I have been preparing myself since the age of 15 when I took up modelling. Apart from being ‘beauty with brains’, one also needs to be a global citizen who respects other cultures and races.”
Sharing about her bond with mentor Sushmita Sen, Urvashi says, “Sushmita is not just a mentor. She is almost like a mother to me. Her grooming sessions are very useful to us.”
So, is she planning to step into Bollywood? “Currently, my focus is on winning the Miss Universe title. I have a lot of offers from Bollywood and South, but I have put them on hold,” she says.
