BBMP’s much-touted “garbage segregation at source” was a non-starter with people across the city unaware how the entire process worked. Citizens felt that BBMP commissioner Rajneesh Goel, who has taken the initiative to end garbage mess in the city, still has to get his act together before the project becomes a success. As D-day, October 1, dawned, there were a number of hitches. While segregation of waste did not really take off as pourakarmikas collected mixed waste on Monday, they told people that only segregated garbage would be accepted from Tuesday.
Residents’ meetings in apartments, BBMP ward-wise meetings of officials, campaigns and discussions in the virtual world all pointed to the fact that the city had taken note of the new garbage scheme and was willing to work make it a success. But problems on the exact modus operandi remain unexplained, residents said such as the exact time garbage is collected and by whom. Mr Goel said: “On visiting Girinagar, Kanakapura Road, RPC layout and Basavangudi wards, I saw lorries stuck which affected lifting of garbage, contractors had not placed bins at many places. and most people were still handing over unsegregated waste.”
