To provide 24x7 service, the Chennai Port Trust has decided to keep the pass sections open on all days.
Last week, the port authorities had issued an order to close the pass section at all places except the extension counter at zero gate on all Sundays and government holidays.
According to G.M. Krishnamurthy, general secretary of Chennai Port Trust Employees Union, the pass section would be kept open on all days.
“Earlier, we were informed that pass section would be closed on Gandhi Jayanthi. But now, the port authorities have decided to keep one shift (6 am to 2 pm) open on Sundays and national holidays,” he added. The port authorities have also decided to keep the pass section open during nights.
“By keeping the pass section open round-the-clock, we can offer our best services and be friendly to the port users,” he added.
While the move will benefit all port users including trailer drivers and cleaners, clearing agents, steamer agents and contractors, it is also expected to provide additional income to port employees, who do night shifts.
DC on Monday carried a report on how the closure of pass section on Sundays affected the port users.
