DMK to hold human chain protest in Chennai Oct. 5

DMK leaders and cadres will form a human chain wearing black shirts on October 5 to ‘condemn’ the failure of the AIADMK government on all fronts.

Accusing the ruling AIADMK of making the state a “dark continent”, due to power cuts, law and order problems and price rise among others, DMK supporters dressed in black outfit will form a human chain from the city collectorate to Light House along the beach road on Friday. The agitation will be led by party chief M. Karunanidhi.

A resolution was adopted at the DMK’s high-level executive committee at an emergency meeting on Monday and the party also slammed ‘foisting’ of cases against its leaders.

The executive criticised power cuts of up to 15 hours in some places, ‘deteriorating’ law and order situation, anti-nuclear protests at Koodankulam and government’s way of handling it by using police, last year’s hike in bus fares and milk prices, and said the ruling AIADMK was pursuing anti-people policies.

After presiding over the meeting, which was attended by his two warring sons Alagiri and Stalin, Mr Karunanidhi demanded a CBI probe into the illegal granite mining case, in which his grandson Dayanithi Alagiri is one of the accused, claiming it to be political vendetta.

He also demanded that the probe cover mining carried out during the earlier AIADMK regime.

On the ongoing Cauvery dispute, it said the Centre should ensure Karnataka released 9,000 cusecs of water, a ruling given by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh-led Cauvery River Authority.

The resolution also accused the AIADMK government of taking unilateral decision, even as Karnataka chief minister Jagadish Shettar had convened an all-party meeting thrice to discuss the issue.

The state’s confrontational approach with Karnataka had resulted in souring relations between people of the two states, the resolution charged.
