The Toyota-IGU Northern India junior golf tournament got off to a flying start at the Golden Green golf course in Gurgaon with more than 100 enthusiastic participants from across India vying to take an early lead.
In a tough battle for supremacy in Category A (age group16 to 18), Aman Raj, Abhishek Kuhar and Viraj Madappa ended the day on top of the leaderboard with a two over par 74, while Piyush Sangwan and Prakhar Asawa are tied on top in Category B (age group 13 to 15) with a one over par 73.
In Category A, the front nine belonged to Aman from the Patna Golf Club, who shot birdies on the first and the eighth holes and an eagle on the 9th.
Following him closely was Kuhar hailing from the DLF Golf and Country Club and Tollygunge’s Madappa. With two birdies on the back nine, Viraj improved his score while Aman lost his composure and spoiled his card with four bogeys and one double bogey on par 4-15th.
Kuhar produced a consistent performance throughout the day and managed four birdies.
In Category B, the competition was stiff between Gurgaon’s Sangwan and Asawa who has recently shifted to the Chandigarh Golf Club.
Sangwan was leading at the end of the first nine holes with three birdies while Asawa could manage only one on the par 3-4th. Sangwan bogeyed three holes on the back nine to let Prakhar take advantage of his slump. Asawa played a stable game and emerged tied on top with Sangwan at the end of the afternoon.
