Why divorce calls for a party

While parting ways is definitely painful, it is not the end of the world. In fact, for some it opens the door for new beginnings. And then celebrate they do!

Pop diva Katy Perry is planning a divorce party on the day of her second wedding anniversary with ex-husband Russell Brand. Her idea gets the nod of approval from many back home who feel it’s a fun way to get closure after a marriage ends on a bitter note.
Since a divorce is already in place, it’s best to make the most of it, says music director Dhruv Dhalla. He says, “There’s nothing wrong in having fun with friends trying to make the given situation casual rather than serious. Today a divorce is not a taboo. Every beginning is exciting. I’d personally like to see a dart game with the spouse’s picture on the wall. Fun and games aside, one has to go through the tough moments, accept them, deal with them and finally let go.”
Sommelier Magandeep Singh uses humour to rationalise the concept of partying post break-up/divorce and says, “With a divorce, a woman has all cause to celebrate as the proceedings will surely leave her considerably richer. It is only fair for Katy to throw a party. And many already believe that getting over is best attained by getting under. Alcohol or men, the only cure for either is more of the same. Therefore, a party is the best place to have a lovely irresponsible mix of the two!”
Then there are those who believe that if somebody is throwing a break-up/divorce party, it’s better the former partners do it together to make it like any other party. “That way the ex-partners won’t be drunk dialing each other,” quips blogger Charu Gaur Naidu.
“Personally I don’t think it’s a very novel idea. But hey people are free to celebrate what they want and how they want,” says Nishant Peralta of European style bistro Cheri.
Nevertheless, such a party isn’t an easy celebration. “It’s a thing to mourn and not celebrate. Personally I feel, it should be looked at as a death of a relationship. No matter how hard the period of marriage was, breaking it and moving away from someone that you once thought you would spend your life with is painful. How can one possibly celebrate it?” asks HR manager Prashant Deb (name changed on request) who is going through a separation.
