Stockbroker Gautam Vora, whose name cropped up as the “boyfriend” whose “fear of commitment” killed model Viveka Babajee, applied for anticipatory bail in the sessions court.
Mr Vora’s counsel told the court that the he was scared that he would be arrested after his name cropped up in media for being the reason behind Babajee’s suicide.
However the prosecution said that they didn’t plan to arrest him as of now. “We have registered a case of accidental death as of now,” said R.V. Kini, chief public prosecutor to the court.
“As of now, we want to record his statement, we have sent him summons for the same,” said Mr Kini. The judge then directed Mr Vora to go to police station on Monday evening and Tuesday morning for recording his statement.
Mr Vora, who was present in the courtroom along with his mother and friends, said that he was not reason behind Babajee’s suicide. Mr Vora’s anticipatory bail application states that he and Babajee were just “good friends” and that he had first met her at a social gathering on April 10 this year. Further, he says that they remained in touch through Facebook and their friendship grew.
When asked what had happened last Thursday when the police claimed that Viveka and Mr Vora fought, his statement to the court reads, “Met her on June 24. We had a few drinks and she was smoking a lot. She was suffering from a bad patch in her life due to financial losses, troubled relationships and the death of her father. I asked her not to smoke and drink so much and left around 9 pm.”
Further, he has said that she wanted to throw him a birthday bash. However, he refused saying that as his father had died eight months ago and so he did not want to party. “Then I went to home. After a while Babajee called me, but I could not undertsand what she was saying, as she was drunk. I told her to stop drinking and call me the next day. I never expected her to commit suicide,” says Mr Vora in his application. Babajee’s diary recovered by the police has provided hints of a strained relationship between her and Mr Vora. The police had also recovered several letters addressed to Mr Vora during a search at her apartment.
Mr Vora’s anticipatory bail application will continue to be heard on Tuesday.
