The families of Indian nationals who perished in the June 1985 bombing of Air India’s Kanishka have called upon Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to promptly implement the recommendations of the Justice John C. Major Commission which recently attributed the tragedy to “institutional” and “organisational” failures.
Citing Mr Harper’s public apology for his government’s failure to stop “the single worst act of terrorism in Canadian history”, Toronto-based lawyers representing the Indians said on Monday, “The Indian families are extremely grateful to the PM of Canada for at last recognising the great tragedy that the bombing was and for his sincere apology. The families are grateful for the PM’s promises that the Recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into the bombing of Air India flight 182 will be promptly considered and implemented and that the families will receive reasonable compensation with respect to their loss and their suffering.”

Gujarat govt plans Somnath temple revival

June 28: The Gujarat government here on Monday mooted a plan envisaging a slew of measures for a holistic development of Somnath temple and putting the shrine located in Junagadh district prominently on the world tourist map.
The Somnath Temple Tourist Township Development plan was proposed by chief minister Narendra Modi during the 107th meeting of the Somnath Temple Trust here.
This was the first meeting attended by Mr Modi after becoming a member of the trust in December 2009.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani, who is also a trustee, attended the meeting, which was held under the chairmanship of former Gujarat chief minister Keshubhai Patel.
After the meet, Mr Advani, Mr Modi and minister of state for home Amit Shah had a separate meeting to discuss various party-related issues and the ongoing statewide agitation against fuel price hike, Bharatiya Janata Party sources said.
