With the aim to enable the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes to examine any reference from the state government regarding inclusion or deletion of any backward group in and from the list of backward classes respectively, the state government on Tuesday introduced the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes (Amendment) Bill, 2010, in the Assembly, which was also passed.
This bill once becomes an act will help the government to expedite the process of inclusion of any new group, including Muslim groups in the list of backward classes. The state government has already announced 10 per cent reservation quota in the state government jobs for socially, educationally and economically backward Muslim population under the other backward classes (OBC) category.
State backward classes welfare minister Jogesh Barman said, “This bill once becomes an act will also empower the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes to examine the problems and conditions of socially and educationally backward classes.”
The state government is currently issuing around four lakh OBC certificates. The minister informed the House that his department would set up some camps to expedite the process of issuing the certificates.

CM’s statement on La Martiniere tomorrow

June 29: Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will make a statement on the issue related to the La Martiniere for Boys’ school in the Assembly on Thursday. Speaker Hashim Abdul Halim on Tuesday told chief government whip Syed Mohammed Masih that the chief minister should make a statement in the House on this issue.
During mention hour, RSP MLA Mohammed Refatullah had raised this issue and sought the state government’s version through the Chair.
