The sessions court granted protection to Gautam Vora, a stockbroker, whose named cropped up after supermodel Viveka Babajee committed suicide on Friday. Suspecting that he would be arrested, Mr Vora, moved an anticipatory bail application (ABA) before the sessions court on Monday. However after recording the statements
of Mr Vora, the police was unable to get any evidence to register a case against him. Further, when public prosecutor R.V. Kini told the court that the prosecution has yet to decide on whether or not it wanted Mr Vora arrested, judge M.L. Tahiliyani remarked that he had doubts about how the inquiry was going. “You (the police) have still been unable to say whether it is case of suicide or homicidal death(murder),” said the judge while hearing the application. “Your inquiry does not appear to be in the right direction,” remarked the judge.
Mr Tahiliyani then asked for photographs of Viveka’s dead body and a video CD capture of the place where she apparently hanged herself. “I wanted to see the marks on her body, in order to see whether it could be a homicidal death,” said the judge and added, “She has committed suicide and you have to find out who abetted the suicide. My only concern is that you should do it properly.”
Mr Kini said, “The police will only be able to come to any conclusions about Mr Vora’s involvement in Viveka’s suicide, after it records statements of various witnesses. Only then can a case be registered.” The police also told the court that as of now, it had no evidence to suggest that Mr Vora had abetted the suicide and hence, there was no reason to arrest him.
Meanwhile, the Khar police on Tuesday recorded a detailed statement of stockbroker Gautam Vora for several hours in connection with the suicide of supermodel Viveka Babajee. While Monday’s questioning covered Mr Vora’s relationship with Viveka, on Tuesday the police focused on his last visit to her flat on June 24. However, his statement, which was basically a repetition of his anticipatory bail application, was found to be vague and inconclusive, and he might be questioned again, said senior policemen.
