A day after senior Congressman from the state Mr Rahman Khan was inducted into the Union cabinet, his alleged involvement in irregularities at Amanath Cooperative Bank has surfaced.
Karnataka State Minorities Commission chairman Anwar Manippady on Monday termed Mr Rahman Khan’s induction into the cabinet as a ‘black day’ for the public in general and Muslim community in particular. He alleged that Mr Rahman Khan oversaw swindling of not less than Rs 2,000 crore from Amanath Bank.
He alleged that the Reserve Bank of India has indicted Mr Rahman Khan in its reports on Amanath Bank. “Mr Rahman Khan, his family members and also his Union cabinet colleague Veerappa Moily were involved in the embezzlement of bank’s funds.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi during her visit to Mangalore criticised Karnataka for its notoriety in corruption, but has chosen to induct Mr Rahman Khan in the cabinet,” he said.
Mr Manippady said he will soon file a complaint before the Lokayukta on the Amanath Cooperative Bank scam.
According to RBI reports, five directors, including Mr Rahman Khan, continued on the bank board though they had failed to repay their loans to the bank, he said.
“They continued on the board, though they were already actively associated in the management of a non-banking finance company, which is another violation. The RBI reports clearly state that on the directions of Mr Rahman Khan, Amanath Bank violated RBI provisions while sanctioning loans and also taking decisions on One Time Settlement (OTS) schemes,” he said.
Mr Manippady alleged that big unsecured loans were extended to several builders, all relatives and friends of Mr Khan.
“Mr Rahman Khan is also involved in the Wakf property scam. He and 13 Wakf Board members were named in the FIR registered by the Lokayukta police in Bijapur in one of the Durgah property cases.
Several RBI reports were somehow not available as people in high offices are hand in glove with the culprits. Mr Khan and other directors have steadily looted Amanath Bank during their tenure,’’ he said.
