[1]Coming down heavily on the state government as well as the Kiran Kumar Reddy Cabinet, Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday accused the government of neglecting the state’s interests and ignoring distressed farmers in the cyclone and flood-affected areas.
Resuming his padayatra in Mahbubnagar after a two-day break, Naidu asked, “Does the CM or his Cabinet colleagues or the officials feel any kind of responsibility towards the farmers in the state? How come the entire Cabinet went to Vizianagaram to attend the wedding of PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana’s daughter? How could they immediately go to Delhi to join the Congress’ show of strength? Is this their accountability to the people when millions are suffering due to heavy rains?”
He reminded the state government that farmers had lost crops over lakhs of acres and millions of people in coastal districts were suffering.
Another accusation he made in the course of his tirade was that the state government had failed to take preventive measures despite the clear warning by the Met department that Cyclone Neelam could wreak havoc.
“I am asking the government what advance measures it took to help the poor farmers, and why it did not alert the district administration early and order relief operations,” he questioned aloud.
Naidu decided to take a break from his padayatra on Monday to tour Krishna, West and East Godavari districts by road to visit the storm-tossed areas and talk to the affected farmers.
In Visakhapatnam district, passengers on a Volvo bus had a narrow escape at Darlapudi bridge when the Varaha river overflowed.
“Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea in the next 48 hours as wind speed above 50 kmph is likely,” the Met office warned.
