Minister in the Prime Minister’s office (PMO) V. Narayanasamy’s remarks that the government is actively considering to make CAG a multi-member body on Monday exploded with political parties including UPA allies warning that any such move might boomerang, as they will oppose it inside and outside the Parliament.
Since the minister has retracted from his statement given to a news agency, ruling Congress said, Narayanasamy has already clarified and so the party has nothing say further. The party, however, made it clear that the edgovernment would not bring any institutional change bas on the activities of “a person” (incumbent CAG Vinod Rai).
Earlier speaking to media, information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari suggested as to how the experiment of multi-member Election Commission stood in “good stead over the decades”.
UPA’s outside ally Samajwadi Party and the Left parties too joined the criticism of the government over the proposal.
SP’s general secretary Mohan Singh said, “People in responsible positions in government should avoid making comments against constitutional bodies...We will not support such a proposal under any condition,” he said.
CPI’s national secretary D. Raja said, “The timing of this statement (Narayansamy’s) is questionable. CAG has exposed a number of major scams, which took place under the Congress-led UPA-II. CAG has done a commendable work and everybody appreciates it.”
