Onus on users to tele-check details

The telecom department has now put the onus on the subscriber to call his operator to verify details before the connection could be activated.

New subscriber verification norms have come into effect from last week. However, this week the government issued a clarification making consumers liable to call his own operator to tele-verify his credentials.

“For tele-verification pu-rpose, the call will be originated by the subscriber and not the telecom service provider. However, it is reiterated that, unless tele-verified the subscriber sh-ould not be able to make any type of call, except to the operator and in-coming calls will remain barred before tele-verification,” said the telecom department.

The telecom department gave the subscribers who do not know their date of birth, the option to give their age for getting the mobile connection.

As per the new verification norms, government has banned the sale of pre-activated SIM cards.
In case government agencies detect sale of pre-activated SIM cards to a subscriber a fine of `50,000 per such connection will be levied on the telecom firms. If the violation is detected, the connection would be treated as a pre-activated one.
