The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) is toying with the idea of allowing those undertaking courses to take a break, if need be, and then return and complete the course.
According to Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr Ramachan-dran Thekkedath, this practice is already in vogue in a few western countries including the United States, which gives students greater leeway and little stress in completing their course.
“But in India this practice is only in the idea stage and I am interested in initiating a debate and holding discussions for a fruitful implementation,” Dr Ramachandran told DC.
Students having varied interests and also personal preoccupations will benefit from it without hurting their academic pursuit.
“Students will be emboldened to take chances and also will get a break to take care of urgent personal needs if such an option is given to them. They will be tension-free as well,” Dr Ramachandran said.
Dr Ramachandran said that 75 per cent of the credits in a course should be subject-specific while 25 per cent should be related to personality development, language and other skills, which will ensure that a consummate professional is produced in the end.
