Zaibunnisa Begum, 74, has been running from pillar to post around the municipal offices in the city for the past 21 years to obtain an “allotment letter” from the estates wing of the civic body.
Mayor Majid Hussain, GHMC commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu and several other senior officials from various departments were “moved” when the septuagenarian narrated her struggle to obtain an allotment letter during an interaction on Saturday.
Zaibunnisa Begum was allotted a municipal quarter (No. 51) in Asif Nagar on a rental basis in 1961. Since then, she has been paying property tax regularly. In May 1991, she applied to the GHMC for a formal letter stating that she has been allotted the quarter. The then commissioner endorsed her application and sent it to the estates wing that takes care of the municipal corporation-owned properties that are leased out and given on rent.
“To date, the allotment letter has not been issued to me. I am a diabetic and BP patient. I think more than three mayors have changed, and half-a-dozen municipal commissioners and over a dozen estate officers have come and gone in the last 21 years. I have lodged complaints through GHMC’s website www.ghmc.gov.in [1] twice, but to no avail,” she said.
Mr Majid Hussain and Mr Krishna Babu issued orders to place the concerned file before them at the earliest and assured Zaibunnisa Begum of doing the needful as soon as possible.
The grievance redressal programme also saw other complaints being lodged, from issues ranging from stray dog menace to illegal constructions and water supply.
