Maoist rebels on Saturday night fired at a police station in a remote pocket of Chhattisgarh's restive Bastar region, police said. No casualty has been reported.
"Maoists fired three-four rounds from a distance at Pamer police station in Bijapur district. The rebels fled after the police retaliated," Mr T.J. Longkumer, inspector general of police of Bastar range, told IANS over phone from Jagdalpur town.
He said no casualty or injury has been reported from either side. The officer refused to give the number of policemen at the police station that is located some 500 km south of capital Raipur close to the Andhra Pradesh border.
Chhattisgarh's 40,000 sq km Bastar region made up of five districts - Dantewada, Bijapur, Bastar, Narayanpur and Kanker - has been rocked by a series of blasts and gunfights in 2010. In about past three months, the state witnessed killings of 150 people, mostly security personnel. Meanwhile, Armed Maoists blew up a mobile tower control room of a private telecom company in Orissa's Malkangiri district, police said on Sunday.
More than 30 rebels of outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist blew up the control room using landmine late Saturday at Nilakamberu village, a senior district police officer told IANS.
Malkangiri, 618 km from here, is considered Maoists stronghold in the state
