[1]We’re not best known for the upkeep of our historical monuments, but the dilapidated state of one of Mumbai’s oldest hotels — Watson’s evokes a sense of sadness. Located in Mumbai’s swish Kala Ghoda area and currently known as the Esplanade Mansion, it is India’s oldest surviving cast iron building.
It was named after its original owner, John Watson in 1863. Of course, it caries a with a whole lot of historic value. Like most hotels during the time, this one also carried a “whites-only” tag. And as much as it was looked down upon for its racist attitude, it was one of the swankiest hotels in the maximum city. It was leased for what would have been a hefty sum then — “ninety two rupees and twelve annas” to Abdul Haq. Now we may not appreciate the legacy it carried, but it represents a milestone era in the country’s history, so perhaps it’s time to treat it with a little respect. We hope the authorities are listening.
