In a shocking incident, a 23-year-old para-medical student travelling in a bus along with her male friend was allegedly gang-raped by a group of men in the vehicle and then thrown out of it after being thrashed badly.
The victim, who hails from Uttarakhand and pursues the course in the hill state, is in a critical condition at the Safdarjung Hospital where she was rushed in the early hours, police said today.
Her male friend was also thrashed badly by the men who gang raped the girl.
The incident took place late last night when the girl along with her male friend, who is an engineer and currently working in a firm, took a White Line bus from Munirka in south Delhi to Dwarka at around 10.00 pm.
During the journey, the girl was allegedly gang-raped by a group of five to six men and even assaulted her when she resisted their attempt. The victim's friend was also beaten up and both were thrown off the bus near Mahipalpur flyover an hour later.
Passers-by had informed the police who came to the spot and rushed the duo to AIIMS from where the girl was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital.
Doctors at the hospital said the victim was in a "critical condition" and that she is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
A case has been registered at the Vasant Vihar Police Station, but no arrests have been made so far.
The girl, who studies in a college in Dehra Dun, is in the capital for her internship.
The incident evoked sharp reactions from women organisations as well as political parties with NCW chairperson Mamata Sharma leading the campaign.
"Such incidents are increasing in Delhi. The police and the government should be really alert.... We will get an inquiry done and will also enquire with the police as to what action has been taken so far," she said.
