The Delhi high court on Wednesday decided to set up five special fast track courts to deal with cases of sexual assault on women, as suggested by the city government.
The decision to set up the courts came a day after chief minister Sheila Dikshit wrote to the Chief Justice of the high court, Justice D. Murugesan, urging that five fast track courts be made functional immediately.
Meanwhile, the high court took suo moto cognisance of the gang-rape of the 23-year-old woman who is struggling on life support system at a hospital here and decided to monitor the probe in the case.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice Murugesan, directed city police commissioner Neeraj Kumar to file a detailed status report within two days explaining why the bus, in which the ghastly crime was committed, was allowed to ply with tinted windows despite the Supreme Court banning all vehicles that have tinted glasses.
The court also sought explanation on how the bus evaded surveillance on city roads for 40 minutes during which the sexual assault of the girl remained undetected. The court also asked for details of police officers who were on patrolling duty in the area.
