[1]When one visits an art show at the Artists’ Centre in Kala Ghoda today, the historical significance of the space isn’t immediately evident. Having celebrated more than half a century as an art exhibition space, the origins of Artists’ Centre is not something that the casual purveyor of art would know of — but it is nonetheless interesting.
The Artists’ Centre served as the meeting place for the founders of the Progressive Artists’ Group, founded by S.H. Raza, F.N. Souza, M.F. Husain and others. Later, other artists who were part of the Bombay Group, like V.S. Gaitonde and Tyeb Mehta, would also meet here. Artists’ Centre (then known as Artists’ Aid Centre) was meant to offer financial support to deserving artists.
Today, it serves as a meeting place for artists and art lovers in Mumbai.
